A Belated Look Back at 2013

I feel so out of it, guys. I'm completely distracted and have been neglecting my blog, which is sad because it's really as much for my benefit as it is for my sweet readers. I wanted to do a little reflection, so humor me while we look back.

January

In January, I babysat Ashleigh's puppy, which was actually a pretty big deal for me!

February

In February, we went to see Icona Pop, Matt & Kim and Passion Pit and it was wonderful! Matt & Kim are amazing live.

March

In March, I helped throw a tea party baby shower and made a runner and pennant banner!

April

In April, I helped pull off a surprise 30th birthday party for my husband and his best friend! I also changed jobs, which was really the biggest thing that happened this year.

May

May marked my triumphant return to wine fest!

June

In June, Sean and I went to see the amazing Tom Wesselman show in Richmond and I hosted a North Carolina-themed wine club.

July

In July, I finally made a terrarium (although one of these plants thrived and the other is totally gone...weird) and went to Savannah!

August

In August, we went to our first drag brunch and...

went to explore Barboursville after a wedding!

September

In September, we went on our first family vacay to Washington, D.C.!

October

In October, Sean stunned me with a wonderful surprise anniversary trip to Ocracoke!

November

In November, Wine Club took a painting class and it was so fun!

December

And I followed that up with a glassblowing session to create my own ornament!

It's been an amazing year of fun, but Sean and I both want to really accomplish some big goals in 2014: buy a car, move (either to another rental or possibly buy) and I'm really hoping we can magically have money left over to go to Amsterdam and maybe Paris. Whew! Wish us luck.

A New Year Merits Some Goals

The other day I declined to make any solid resolutions, but as the first week of the year has passed, I couldn't help but come up with some goals for the year that I'd like to share.

1. Write honestly about life as it is.
One of the most refreshing things I saw in the blogosphere last year was a series of posts by my favorite bloggers called "Things I'm Afraid to Tell You." The bloggers let the veil of their picture-perfect lives come down and revealed some pretty serious truths that lurk behind their instagrams: they're broke. they're struggling with weight. they got divorced. they aren't satisfied in their careers.

It was really inspiring, and while I think it's healthy and necessary to keep some parts of my life not on the internet, I also think it's important to remember why people write and read blogs, which is to connect. I've found it more and more difficult to connect with bloggers I loved in the past because, frankly, their blog content has become completely disconnected from their identities. And while I love to indulge my inner fashion magazine editor on occasion, I also don't want my blog to get far away from why I started it, which was to document my life.

At the end of the day, I do it more for me than for anyone else, and I believe if I'm more true to that, you might find it more relatable in the end. So that's goal #1...less worrying about whether my blog is "pinworthy" or has enough original content and more focus on using it as a creative outlet and personal motivational tool.

2. Get serious about saving (food).
We have regular transfers set up from our checking account to our savings account. I buy most stuff on sale if I can, but I suck at remembering and using coupons. But we don't go nearly far enough trying to save money, and I have one particularly bad habit I want to break.

I waste too much food. It's a combination of poor planning/impulse purchasing at the grocery store/indulging cravings. I realized it was a problem when the cabinet where I keep my pantry staples was overflowing with types of flour, because I have accidentally bought flour several times without realizing I already had some at home. That's ridiculous.

So, for January, I'm challenging myself to limit my grocery trips until I have sufficiently used up some of the food in the freezer and pantry. I save it all up like we're going to have some insane emergency and it just doesn't make sense!

I think this will take me to the next level of cooking. Since I first started learning, I would choose recipes that sounded good and design my grocery list around recipes. That's all fine, except I end up with leftover ingredients that, for whatever reason, don't get used.

I also have a tremendous problem with my own pickiness. I have always been someone easily brought down by cravings and resistant to repetition within a given week. Let's just say I'll never be the person who has lasagna two nights in a row. I have to get over this to reduce food waste.

I also buy a bunch of food expecting to be making dinner four nights of the week and then end up accepting spontaneous dinner invitations, coming home later than planned and too tired to cook or covering meetings I didn't expect. It's just the reality of our lives that we can't keep a lot of fresh food around, or it gets tossed. I have to accept that and plan for it.

Those are the two biggies that might be impacting this blog of mine. I'm so grateful for every single one of you who checks in with me every day (or every week, or every once in a while), and I'm excited for another year together.

2012 in Pictures

In January, I sewed my first pillow (oh lord, I need to sew some more...that was my last home project!)

In February, I wrestled mightily (but succeeded) with making a tufted headboard.

In March, we went exploring for a day on the Eastern Shore.

In April, we ordered glasses online!

In April and May, we went to Ireland, my first trip out of the country! See pics from all over the country here, here, here and here.

In June, we bought a new dresser, mastered gouda mac & cheese and made my first ice cream!

In July, my pal Bret and I visited the DC area, and I went to the Virginia Derby.

In August, I started painting again!

In September, I finally got to dance my butt off to Girl Talk in concert!

In October, I went to my 10-year high school reunion! Eesh.

In November, I had a great Fall Harvest birthday party.

And this month, I had what I consider my most successful wrapping color scheme yet — green and gold.

Guest Post on Visiting Hampton Roads

Norfolk skyline, from the Portsmouth ferry.

Hi friends! I totally forgot I had a guest post up at my friend Laura's blog.

Laura asked me if I would write a guide to Hampton Roads, including some of my favorite spots and places I still am hoping to go! Scoot on over there and read my picks, and be sure to read Laura's sweet blog, too.

Have a great weekend! I'm hoping to do some cooking...I'm fantasizing about fried green tomato BLTs.

2011, Looking Back

Yesterday, as we read our friends' New Years' Facebook posts, I commented to Sean that we didn't have an astounding 2011, comparatively. He agreed, and we noted we were thankful for little trips here and there, raises and general good fortune. But I did think it would be nice to look back at the little adventures of 2011, as I stare straight toward the adventures of 2012.

In January, we had our first piece of art framed, which felt very grown-up and daunting!

In February, I introduced my "I Spy" column, which I haven't done in forever, but will hopefully pick up soon!

In March, I fell head over heels back in love with watercolor painting. The obsession slowed a bit lately, but I'm hoping to get back into it soon.

In April, I made tie-dyed napkins.

In May, I went on a mid-week vacation to D.C. with my friend Bret to see "Follies" at the Kennedy Center.

In June, we took a quick trip to Staunton, I wrote a column for Design Sponge and we took a quick trip to NJ and New York.

In July, I redecorated the porch, including painting my rug.

In August, wine club had a blind tasting, we went to Winston-Salem, and we had our first earthquake!

In September, I covered Hurricane Irene and mastered pork tenderloin.

In October, we celebrated our one-year wedding anniversary by attending another wedding and visiting Asheville.

In November, I threw myself a country-fried 27th birthday party!

And last month, we celebrated the holidays with lots of parties, gifts, travel and fun. 2011's color scheme was silver and gold.

So that was 2011! Here's hoping 2012 brings more adventure and crafty fun!

New Look

Hello!
Just a quick note to acknowledge a bit of a redesign around here. Someday when I have all the monies or all the design knowledge, I'd like to make it look crazy good, but for now this is just a change to better suit my aesthetic...a little cleaner, albeit accidentally girlier. The header, and the little splotches, are from watercolor paintings I've done, in case you're wondering.

In the next few weeks, I might continue tweaking with some things, namely synthesizing my labels into just a few categories. Thank you for reading, and now we'll continue with the regularly scheduled content!

2010 In Review

This is a weird little picture I snapped of my engagement and wedding rings on one of my desk dinosaurs. Just a day in the life of me....

Every blogger worth her salt has already posted a year-in-review post, but I've been travelling so much, I have barely had a moment to catch my breathe, must less reflect. Here are some of my favorites from 2010:

January: Quick-and-easy fajitas.

February: Mastered my favorite soup, chicken tortilla soup!

March: Learned you can't put grease down the drain (I know! How did I live before?) and shared my husband's favorite recipe for Irish stew.

April: Whipped up delicious Orange Cointreau cupcakes.

May: Tried, and failed, at gardening and had a little party for the end of LOST, which I blogged about all year!

June: Got bit by the antiquing bug and went to the longest yard sale and became a regular at the Williamsburg Antique Mall.

July: My friends and family threw me an amazing Breakfast at Tiffany's bridal shower.

August: Made jack-and-coke cupcakes, with Jack Daniels frosting and discovered my new favorite pasta sauce, amatriciana.

September: Had a semi-fail trying to make gruyere gougeres, but they still tasted amazing!

October: GOT MARRIED! Our photographer created an amazing music montage and we honeymooned in San Francisco, and ate our way through the city.

November: Recap of our wedding ceremony and started making a new party favorite, mini lasagnas!

December: Got my crafty on, and created my paper wreath, which is still hanging on our door!

15 days till I do!

Doesn't this girl look just like fall? I'm ready to say hello to Fair Isle sweaters, for sure. Image via fffound.

Well, I don't have a nice, streamlined update for you today. Manic and meandering will have to do. I have a new wine club post coming up tomorrow; it was supposed to go up earlier this week but life has been pretty crazy the past few weeks.

15 days till our wedding! 15!!!

We're paying our vendors, ordering candy for the dessert bar, delivering ribbon to the florist and tweaking the ceremony with our officiant. It's amazing to think how much was left to be done at the start of the summer and how our to-do list is dwindling every day. I love that! I can't wait until I look at my to-do list on The Knot (the most obnoxious thing on earth) and have 0 items left to accomplish!

I'm also slowly starting to come up with ideas for what to do while we're in San Francisco for our honeymoon. Have any of you been? What are your must-sees, must-eats and must-shops? I'm hoping to go have pizza at Flour + Water and want to make sure to grab a cheesy tourist picture in front of the Full House row of painted lady Victorian homes.

Kate Spade Book Clutch

Hey remember me? That girl with the blog? Yeah, something happened this week where I just completely lost my voice and had not too much to say. I've been stressing a little about the wedding, working, trying to plan dinner, failing to make dinner, and generally running around like a crazy person. I'd like to talk about a big HUGE domestication failure I plan to tackle this weekend, but for now, I think we should talk about this Kate Spade clutch because it is the cutest.

Kate Spade has a special, limited-time-only "bestsellers" line of clutches, including The Great Gatsby, The Importance of Being Earnest and Great Expectations. They are crazy cute, and retail for (way out of my price range) $325.

A little wave

This is just a friendly little wave to let you guys know I'm alive. I've barely been home since Thursday due to Memorial Day traveling and night meetings, etc. but I thought I'd drop a line.

I went to meet with a florist on Thursday and was very encouraged by the meeting. It's always nerve-racking to put your vision in someone else's hands, but I think this particular woman's hands are quite capable. Once the contracts are signed, I will have every vendor lined up. Yes, it's taken me a full year! lol.

I've been thinking a lot lately about pace. I have so many friends who have gotten engaged and are getting married in the time I've been engaged. I spend a lot of time either feeling bad for taking so long or judging others for not taking long enough, but I keep reminding myself: a wedding is just a wedding, and just like love, it's what you make it. My priorities were just that -- my priorities. So I keep reminding myself it's okay I took a year and a half for the reasons I did.

Wedding Inspiration: My Grandparents!

I got a scanner this weekend and it completely took over my life! But the great thing is, I can now share my favorite wedding I've ever seen: my grandparent's.

I'm not totally sure about the year, though I'd estimate about 1958 or 1959. The bridesmaids wore blue, with matching veils. I've always loved how very formal and classic this wedding is, and how adorable my grandparents are.

This is my favorite wedding photo of the batch, and maybe of anyone, ever. I hope I can maybe replicate it, but I don't think that's even possible, because this is just that classic.

In other news, today is my one-year blogiversary!! Hopefully I can pull together a fun post to commemorate such an event later tonight. Thank you for reading, friends!
