Translated: Georgia O'Keeffe-Inspired Decor

It's been a LONG time since I've done a "translated" post, but I'm feeling rejuvenated these days and inspired. My mother sent me a postcard a couple years ago of this painting by Georgia O'Keeffe of her favorite mountain, Cerro Pedernal. The colors are so striking and I often find myself staring at it when I'm in that corner of the living room. I'm not typically one for Southwestern decor, but I loved the idea of drawing some inspiration from it for a colorful, comfortable living room.

1. Set the tone with rich turquoise curtains, $148 at Anthropologie.
2. Update the classic O'Keeffe cow skull in a faux metallic, $199 at Z Gallerie.
3. I love the glow of this green glass lamp, $120 at Pottery Barn.
4. Speaking of glow, I'm loving this rich-looking gold accent table, $72 at Target.
5. I feel fairly certain cheaper leather sofas exist, but I loved the color of this one, $2,599 at Pottery Barn.
6. Bring the whole room together (Big Lebowski-style) with this kilim rug from RUGS USA.
7. Cuddle up with an orange throw, $98 at Wayfair.
8. Accent the room with a midcentury-style rope armchair. I see them pop up for under $200 on Ebay, Craigslist and in antique stores; this one is new and expensive at $3,395 from Design Within Reach. 

Translated: Pottery Into Rustic Living Room

It's been a while since I've felt really inspired to think about decor like I normally do...primarily because I feel kinda "done" with our apartment at the moment and we're not planning on buying a house for at least six months. BUT, I've been really admiring beautiful pottery lately and I was totally struck by these new pieces at Leif Shop by Kevin Wilcoxson. It just screams out for a summer-y, rustic, Western-inspired, sun-filled living room in a midcentury ranch with big, big windows.

1. Channel 1970s Laurel Canyon with this woven leather Pacific Wonderland chair, $899 at One King's Lane.

Translated: Spring Bouquet Into Bedroom

It's been such a long time since I've done one of these posts, which I always enjoy because they help me think about color combinations and inspiration. I haven't been able to get this delicate palette out of my head since I first spotted this bouquet from Martha Stewart Weddings. 

I pictured it in a girly bedroom, luxurious and soothing, yet cheery and fun.

1. Try one wall, or even a nook, in Joy's beautiful wallpaper.
2. Bring a little nature inside with a sweet, antique-looking bunny sketch by Teagan White.
3. Capture the delicate folds of the flowers with the soft folds of West Elm's shams.
4. A tufted gray armchair brings some masculinity to the room, grounding it from becoming too sweet.
5. Give the room a sunny pop with a yellow linen pillow.
6. Set the tone of the room with the silvery lavender headboard.
7. Petal pink looks grown-up in John Robshaw's quilt.
8. A lotus stool provides the perfect spot to rest a book and a glass of water, or just toss today's dirty clothes.

Translated: FCB Cadell-Inspired Tabletop

In my freshman year of college, I was browsing the art prints for sale in the student center and came across a print by FCB Cadell, a Scottish painter known for his paintings of interiors. I completely forgot about it until I stumbled onto his work again the other day and suddenly remembered the print, which used to hang in my dorm room. I looked up some more of his paintings, which all capture the most beautiful tabletop details.

A perfect red-orange rimmed plate, plus a series of painted pitchers...

A balance of jade green, orange and rich black...

The most elegant glass flute, with a beribboned silhouette...

Translated: Lela Rose into Powder Room

I'm not sure everyone would look at this beautiful Lela Rose fall 2012 dress and see bathroom tile, but hey, I'm not everyone! I have pretty boring taste in bathrooms in general, but I think if you can afford to splurge on gorgeous tile (knowing you might get sick of it), you should do it. Here's my Lela Rose-inspired imaginary bathroom:

Translated: Florals into Organic Dining Room

Do you ever find yourself attracted to the same clothes and patterns all the time? I find myself reaching for striped sweaters every time I see one, and I'm still not sick of chevron decor. I want to challenge myself into drawing inspiration from the images I find beautiful, and seeing where it leads me. So, with that in mind, I wanted to start a new recurring feature I'm calling "Translated." Sometimes it might be a picture of art translated into a room, or an outfit or vice versa. 

Today, I'm drawing inspiration from Ariel Dearie Flowers, a lovely Brooklyn-based floral designer whose organic white-and-green arrangement caught my eye. I took inspiration from this image and translated it into an earthy and organic dining room:
