Sunday Best v.44

We finally saw "Black Swan" last night. I love it, of course; I'm a sucker for anything ballet-related (even if I didn't enjoy my classes all the time). These pictures are of Anna Pavlova, who performed a famous solo ballet called "The Dying Swan." I think her costume was the prettiest I've seen!

My mother had a coloring book of famous ballerinas and I loved it so much, she photocopied the pages so I could color them over and over again. The Anna Pavlova page didn't get much coloring, because I liked to leave her costume snowy white.

Anyways, I'm finally back to doing Sunday Best after a little hiatus (weren't the holidays just killer this year?). I hope you enjoy!

Christmas Presents!

This was one of those crazy Christmases where I totally made out. I got so much great stuff that I truly couldn't keep track of it all, and I didn't have that sense of disappointment you get sometimes when you didn't get the one thing you really wanted. My family (both old and new) is awesome. I thought I'd highlight some of my gifts that I've mentioned wanting on the blog before (partially so I don't receive duplicates!).

I received myriad cooking gifts, but I especially loved the super shiny Cuisinart stainless steel pan!

For my birthday (not Christmas, but what the heck), my sister-in-law bought me the Domino Book of Decorating. One would think that I would now feel okay about getting rid of my Domino archives, but no. I throw away nothing.

My in-laws bought me this beautiful book about decorator Dorothy Draper called "In the Pink," written by her protege Carleton Varney. It's the perfect coffee table book!

Remember this Verabel locket that I blogged about? My super friend Bret ordered it for me! It's become my daily staple; it's the perfect length and I won't lie, I love fiddling with the locket.
And my mom bought me a beautiful bottle of Kate Spade's Twirl perfume (also another one I blogged about), and I've been spritzing it on daily. New perfume has such a power to make you feel glamorous, even when you're headed to the grocery store.

I also got about 4 more books, so my reading is planned for the next three months! I hope you all got something you really wanted!

I Like Your Style: Patricia Highsmith

I happened to catch "The Talented Mr. Ripley" on TV yesterday while I was working from home, and was reminded that I've always meant to read some of author Patricia Highsmith's work. My impression of her was that she was a young, feisty Flannery O'Connorish prototype of Patti Smith, writing psychosexual books that were entirely unladylike and deliciously haunting.

I had never seen a picture of her until yesterday and was struck at how much she reminds me of Peggy's lesbian friend Joyce on Mad Men.

Highsmith spent her post-Barnard days writing comic books with the boys. At 29, she finally graduated up to novelist in 1950, when her book "Strangers on a Train" came out. It was soon adapted to film by Hitchcock.

Acquaintances have remembered her as cruel and unloving, but at least she had her cats.

And looked darn stylish in her Bertoia chair.

She died in 1994, seemingly having never smiled with her teeth. No matter; at least she had a "look."

West Elm for Spring

I am crazy lusting over the new West Elm spring catalog. It seems like they've got everything I've been searching for, in all the right colors and fabrics. That probably just means I'm feeling very trendy these days, but screw it, I'll love on it just the same. Here's a few of the things that went straight to my wish list:

Above: The zig zag bath mat, $29.

The modern take on the tufted chair, called the Elton, $499-$599 depending on upholstery. We have a sort of sad (but much loved in its time) hand-me-down armchair that I think will have to be replaced the next time we move. I have my eye on something comfy but curvy like this, possibly in their paisley pattern.

I'm about this close to pulling my trigger finger on one of these glass mirror boxes. I almost bought something comparable from Crate & Barrel in November and backed away from it, but I'm still daydreaming about buying one to store my childhood gem collection. Bring a little natural history into my home!

And as a lifelong lover of anything striped, I am in love with the $39 stripe shower curtain.

Barn Light Company

I've just discovered the Barn Light Electric company, and it's like industrial modern heaven! I don't have a house to fix up, but I spend a lot of time daydreaming about my future industrial-meets-fanciful-meets-prints galore home and I can imagine buying out all of Barn Light Electric's inventory!

My favorites include the Benjamin Gooseneck porcelain lamp in jadeite, which sells for $239.

The lipstick red Artesia shade, $144.

And the fabulous Apprenticeship work table, a reproduction factory table. I can imagine that making a great kitchen island in a loft.

Pinterest

These are just a few of the pretty images I've been pinning and repinning over at Pinterest. Pinterest is kind of like a Twitter for visual people, a great way to catalog the images that inspire you and stumble upon other pretty and interesting things. I've been enjoying it greatly, so I hope you'll follow me!

Just Call Us The Griswolds From Now On

Ah, the first married Christmas. When little girls picture their first Christmas with their spouse, they imagine festive holiday dinners, hanging some beautiful "first Christmas" ornament from a fragrant evergreen, opening a box with a kitten inside, wearing a collar that happens to be a diamond necklace. What they perhaps don't picture is food poisoning/China buffets/minor car accidents/unexpected blizzards. For some reason, that doesn't make it into Martha Stewart photo shoots!

Our first Christmas began promisingly enough, with a trip to the only fancy restaurant in my hometown for a reunion with my high school pals. Don't we look cute? Don't be misled; we spent the whole dinner gossiping!

Afterward, we retired to my friend Bethany's house, where Bret whipped up his new cocktail: a Champagne spin on cherry limeades. His fabulous blazer, by the way, was from H&M!

They had planned a festive night of kind-hearted cakes, Apples to Apples with in-joke cards planted in the pile and a couple rounds of white elephant with treats from the local dollar store. Fun was had by all.

The next morning, Sean and I grabbed a couple burgers at a local chain restaurant, scarfed them down and headed to my mom's home in Kentucky. All seemed well, until four hours later, when Sean suddenly popped off the couch while we were watching "Miracle on 34th Street" and declared he didn't feel well. I don't know if it was the burger or what, but Sean ended up feeling sick to his stomach and a little pukey for the remainder of the trip. The poor thing had to spend the whole visit lying in bed, while we opened presents. I felt a little lost without him by my side, but I made a new friend:

My step-nephew Spencer! He and I got plenty of bonding time in while Sean rested.

On Christmas Day, we got up and traveled 2 hours to my grandmother's house. Sean still felt awful, but she managed to convince him to eat some soup. Then my dad and stepmom broke the news that they hadn't managed to make it to the grocery store in time, so we'd have to eat out for Christmas. That left us two options: IHOP or China Buffet. So we enjoyed a Christmas dinner of General Tso's, fried rice and those sugar puff donut thingies. The China Buffet, by the way, was packed. Everybody was living out their "A Christmas Story" fantasies.

When we left the buffet, we found a fresh slick of snow and ice had covered the road. My dad lives at the top of a steep hill, and because Sean was still sick, I was driving his car. Here's a tip: If you are driving a little coupe with power steering that is much lighter than your own car, and you're staring straight up an ice-covered hill, and you know you lost a little momentum when you hit a pothole as you made the turn, just don't even bother trying to make it up the hill.

Because if you do try, this will happen. We started to slide backwards and in my fear, I tried one last thrust of the acceleration even though I KNEW that was the wrong thing to do. All that did was accelerate our pulses, because we started to turn and I knew we could easily soon hit a small retaining wall, or worse, tip the front of the car off the side of the hill. I threw up the emergency brake, and stopped the car, leaving it blocking the road and got out, waving my hands and screaming, "I'm done! I'm done with this!"

I had no traction on my stupid stylish boots, so my dad and Sean did the dirty work of getting the car straightened and down the hill. I had hit the retaining wall, leaving a dent in Sean's bumper, but CHRISTMAS MIRACLE, it was gone the next morning.

We left to head home, which is an eight-hour drive, and near the middle of the state, started receiving alarming reports from friends and family about the snowstorm that was drenching the East Coast of Virginia. Newport News received about a foot-and-a-half of snow, and when I checked the traffic cameras for our exit, I couldn't see for the snow on the lens. Needless to say, we stopped in Charlottesville overnight, exhausted and ready to be at home.

When we did get home, we arrived to half-plowed secondary roads and I ended up working from home for two days. When we finally went out to clean my car, it looked like this.

We can already look back and laugh about our haphazard first Christmas. No kittens or spiral hams, but plenty of misadventures worthy of a "Vacation" movie. Needless to say, I've decided we aren't going ANYWHERE in January.

Decoupaged Lampshade

Just spotted this new "Well-Defined Lamp" for $388 at Anthropologie...great shape to the lamp, but I have to say, couldn't this be the easiest DIY project? Pick up a cheapie acrylic or glass lamp at Target, get a shade from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and a couple hours later, you, too, could have a well-defined lampshade.

Resolutions

I honestly can't remember where this picture came from, but it reminded me of the Times Square ball.

This year, I feel like I have more resolutions than ever. Of course, most of them won't be realized, so I'm going to try to focus on just a few:
  1. Better Food Management: I want to be throwing away less food, buying less lunch and making more effort toward eating breakfast.
  2. Basic Sewing Skills: By the end of 2011, I want to be able to sew a button. If I'm really ambitious, pillow covers.
  3. Good Cleaning Habits: Right now, my cleaning habits consist of manic scrubbing when I'm expecting a guest. Otherwise, I live about a step above a college-aged boy.
  4. Trying Things That Scare Me: This includes food items (mushrooms!), projects (making a headboard!) and big stuff (figuring out a savings plan).
I'm happy to have something as big as the wedding out of the way, but since I became a Mrs., I've been preoccupied with ideas about new projects to tackle. What are you hoping to accomplish this year?

2010 In Review

This is a weird little picture I snapped of my engagement and wedding rings on one of my desk dinosaurs. Just a day in the life of me....

Every blogger worth her salt has already posted a year-in-review post, but I've been travelling so much, I have barely had a moment to catch my breathe, must less reflect. Here are some of my favorites from 2010:

January: Quick-and-easy fajitas.

February: Mastered my favorite soup, chicken tortilla soup!

March: Learned you can't put grease down the drain (I know! How did I live before?) and shared my husband's favorite recipe for Irish stew.

April: Whipped up delicious Orange Cointreau cupcakes.

May: Tried, and failed, at gardening and had a little party for the end of LOST, which I blogged about all year!

June: Got bit by the antiquing bug and went to the longest yard sale and became a regular at the Williamsburg Antique Mall.

July: My friends and family threw me an amazing Breakfast at Tiffany's bridal shower.

August: Made jack-and-coke cupcakes, with Jack Daniels frosting and discovered my new favorite pasta sauce, amatriciana.

September: Had a semi-fail trying to make gruyere gougeres, but they still tasted amazing!

October: GOT MARRIED! Our photographer created an amazing music montage and we honeymooned in San Francisco, and ate our way through the city.

November: Recap of our wedding ceremony and started making a new party favorite, mini lasagnas!

December: Got my crafty on, and created my paper wreath, which is still hanging on our door!
